Mars Express has been our eyes and ears on Mars since 2003. It has unveiled countless captivating formations. This particular image, captured by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), showcases a powerful sandblasting event.
The image reveals ridges on the left side of a fresh impact crater. These ridges, formed by strong Martian winds, tell a story of erosion. The winds whipped up sand particles, blasting them against sedimentary rock, gradually wearing away the softer layers. The harder layers remained, creating the unique sculptures we see today - known as yardangs.
All the yardangs lean in the same direction, providing scientists with valuable information about the prevailing wind direction. But this observation offers so much more.
Within the image, we find three distinct formations: the yardangs, an impact crater, and a feature called "platy flow." Platy flow is less visible but equally intriguing. It forms when lava crusts over but continues to flow beneath, breaking the surface into solid plates that shift like ice floes on Earth.
What's fascinating is the relationship between the yardangs and platy flow. The yardangs appear to have formed on top of the platy flow, suggesting they are more recent formations.
Images like these are invaluable to scientists, helping them piece together Mars' story. This data could be critical for future missions, when humans finally set foot on the Red Planet.
