Unboxing and Review: The New Seiko 5 Sports Field Series - A Guide to Adventure (2026)

Seiko's 5 Sports Field Series: A Tool Watch with a Twist

Seiko's 5 Sports collection has been a staple in the watch world for its versatility and affordability. What started as a home for SKX-inspired sports watches has evolved into a diverse range of models, including GMT watches, collaborations with brands like HUF and Pepsi, and gold-toned references. Now, the collection welcomes four new additions: the 5 Sports Field Series, each fitted with a compass bezel, a feature more commonly associated with Seiko's Prospex outdoor-focused models.

The 5 Sports Field Series watches are tool watches through and through, with straightforward, highly legible dials, large Arabic numerals, and a day-date display. The compass bezel is the head-turning feature, but it's not the only update. Seiko has also given the Arabic numerals a full coating of LumiBrite, making them more visible in low-light conditions. The watches are also water-resistant up to 100 meters and powered by the proven 4R36 automatic movement.

One of the most interesting aspects of the 5 Sports Field Series is the compass bezel. Unlike a dive bezel, which tracks elapsed time, the compass bezel helps with rough bearings. Marked with E, W, S, (North is a luminous dot) along with SE, SW, NE, and NW, it works together with the position of the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, you point the hour hand towards the sun and rotate the bezel so that the south marker sits halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock marker. In the Southern Hemisphere, the 12 o'clock marker is pointed towards the sun, and the north marker is set halfway between 12 o'clock and the hour hand.

The bidirectional steel bezel has a diamond-pattern knurled edge, making it easy to grip and adjust. The HDB006 and HDB007 models have a brushed steel bezel, while the HDB008 and HDB009 models have a brown and black coating, respectively. All four models have a lumed pearl at 12 o'clock to mark north.

The 5 Sports Field Series watches are packed inside a steel case measuring 41mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and 48.5mm lug-to-lug. The short lugs and case profile help keep things manageable on the wrist. The package is completed by a Hardlex crystal, mineral glass display caseback, push-pull crown, and 100 meters of water resistance.

The dials come in various colors, with the HDB006 featuring a glossy black dial, the HDB007 a white dial, the HDB008 a khaki green dial, and the HDB009 a brown dial. All dials have a sunray-brushed finish and an angled inner minute flange. The hands and Arabic numerals are coated with LumiBrite, making them highly legible in low-light conditions.

Inside each watch is Seiko's in-house calibre 4R36 automatic movement, which beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers around 41 hours of power reserve. The movement displays the hours, minutes, central seconds, day, and date.

The 5 Sports Field Series watches come with either a 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp (HDB006 and HDB007) or a green and brown nylon strap (HDB008 and HDB009), both with a 20mm lug width. The HDB008 and HDB009 models are priced at EUR 390, while the HDB006 and HDB007 models are priced at EUR 410.

In conclusion, the Seiko 5 Sports Field Series is a fantastic addition to the collection, offering a tool watch with a twist. The compass bezel adds a unique feature to the watches, making them stand out from the crowd. With their affordable price point, these watches are a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and functional tool watch.
